A Cost-Effectiveness Study of Animal Disease Eradication Strategies: Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Ireland AgEcon
Dillon, Emma J..
The primary focus of this poster paper is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of alternative control strategies for a number of simulated outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) in four agriculturally diverse Irish regions, examining for the first time, the potential role of emergency vaccination in the country. With the increasing threat of transboundary animal diseases due to globalisation, wider market integration and increased animal movement it is important that such an evaluation of control and eradication strategies be undertaken and contingency plans be put in place. The new EU Directive (2003/85/EC) on FMD control permits the use of emergency vaccination as part of an FMD control strategy. The slaughter of infected animals and "dangerous...

Behavior of genetic (co)variance components in populations simulated from non-additive genetic models of dominance and overdominance R. Bras. Zootec.
Cunha,Elizângela Emídio; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza.
The aim of this work was to investigate the short-term behavior of the genetic variability of quantitative traits simulated from models with additive and non-additive gene action in control and phenotypic selection populations. Both traits, one with low (h² = 0.10) and the other with high (h² = 0.60) heritability, were controlled by 600 biallelic loci. From a standard genome, it was obtained six genetic models which included the following: only the additive gene effects; complete and positive dominance for 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the loci; and positive overdominance for 50% of the loci. In the models with dominance deviation, the additive allelic effects were also included for 100% of the loci. Genetic variability was quantified from generation to...

EXAMINATION OF PIG FARM TECHNOLOGY BY COMPUTER SIMULATION AgEcon
Szoke, Szilvia; Nagy, Lajos; Kovacs, Sandor; Balogh, Peter.
Agricultural production is among the riskiest production activities. Similarly to other branches of agriculture in animal breeding the finished product is the result of complex procedures. The biological-technological procedure, the creation of the product is affected by an outstanding number of environmental factors which also cause uncertainties. In the North Great Plain Region of Hungary, sows, gilts and slaughter pigs are produced on a corporate farm. The reliable operation data of this company provide a stable basis for and estimating future costs and revenue and their distributions. Monte Carlo methods are one of the generally accepted tools for modeling risks. The significant independent variables, their ranges and probability distributions, and the...

Inclusion of genetic relationship information in the pedigree selection method using mixed models Genet. Mol. Biol.
Nunes,José Airton Rodrigues; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Ferreira,Daniel Furtado.
We used a mixed model approach and computer simulation to evaluate the inclusion of parentage information as determined by the genealogy established in the pedigree method. The simulations were based on a purely additive genetic model for one quantitative trait of 20 unlinked segregating loci with equal effects and an allelic frequency of 0.5 for heritability values of 10%, 25%, 50% and 75% for selection based on an F4:5 progeny mean. We simulated 1000 experiments for each heritability value, corresponding to the evaluation of 256 F4:5 progenies. The phenotypic values of the progenies were analyzed according to two models, one ignoring and one considering the additive genetic parentage among the progenies. The additive relationship coefficients among F4:5...

Increasing yoghurt daily production with modeling and simulation process Ciência Rural
Araújo,Adolfo Vicente; Queiroz,Daniel Marçal de; Arcanjo,Gemima Santos; Dias,Santos Henrique Brant; Alves,Renato Martins; Pinto,Francisco de Assis de Carvalho; Valente,Domingos Sárvio Magalhães.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to use the modeling and computer simulation to support decision makers, aiming to increase the productive capacity of the agro-industry of LaticínioFunarbe. Specifically, it has modeled the current yoghurt production sector for simulation that enables it to meet the new demand. The Arena 14.7 simulation software was used to conduct the modeling. To validate the model, the output of yoghurt production collected at the factory for three months was compared with the output from the simulated computational model. Two indicators were established to perform analyzes of four different scenarios. The implemented model resulted in an increase in the production capacity of 5,000L.d-1 of yoghurt, corresponding to a...

Intrapopulation fixation index dynamics in finite populations with variable outcrossing rates Scientia Agricola
Coelho,Alexandre Siqueira Guedes; Vencovsky,Roland.
The intrapopulation fixation index ( f ) is inversely related to the outcrossing rate (t). Results obtained from data on molecular markers of natural populations have shown that these values are highly variable, even when measured in the same group of individuals. It is thus suggested that factors besides those described in Wright's genetic equilibrium must be operating. Using simulated data sets this study shows that the finite size condition of a population is sufficient to spread the estimated f values along a range at equilibrium, as opposed to keeping them at the theoretical equilibrium point. The variation in outcrossing rates can amplify this range considerably. Correlation between estimated f values obtained from different loci in this condition...

Modeling for Taxol® Separation in a simulated moving bed BABT
Cremasco,Marco Aurelio; Starqui,Axel Nicolas.
This work presents an alternative numerical resolution strategy for a model to describe the dynamic of linear adsorption processes involving multicomponent mixture of taxanes with Taxol® (paclitaxel), a powerful anti-cancer agent, and non-identified impurities, in a Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) system. To solve the model, a hybrid method were used. The liquid concentration inside the particles was found analytically and was related with the liquid bed concentration using Duhamel's theorem. The results from simulation were compared with experimental ones from the literature, showing a good agreement, which demonstrated the applicability of the model and of the hybrid resolution proposed.

Selection intensities of families and clones in potato breeding Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Benavente,César Augusto Ticona; Pinto,César Augusto Brasil Pereira.
Families selection has not been recommended as a selection method for vegetative propagated species. To verify its utility for potato improvement a series of experiments were carried out under warm temperatures (rainy season). Thirty clonal families originated from heat tolerant parents were evaluated for tuber yield and specific gravity. After obtaining the seedling generation (SG) and the first clonal generation (FCG) individual clones from a further two generations were assessed. Simulations were conducted with different intensities of family selection in SG and FCG and intensities of clonal selection in subsequent generations. The results show that family selection intensities between 50% and 60% allowed the greatest gains. Estimates of h² at the...

Simulation of population size and genome saturation level for genetic mapping of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Luciano da Costa e; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Moreira,Maurilio Alves; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de.
Various population sizes and number of markers have been used to obtain genetic maps. However, the precise number of individuals and markers needed for obtaining reliable maps is not known. We used data simulation to determine the influence of population size, the effect of the degree of marker saturation of the genome, and the number of individuals required for mapping of recombinant inbred lines (RILs). Three genomes with 11 linkage groups were generated with saturation levels of 5, 10 and 20 cM. For each saturation level populations were generated with 50, 100, 154, 200, 300, 500 and 800 individuals with 100 replications for each population size. A total of 2100 populations was generated and mapped. Small marker numbers and small population sizes...

Virtual Dissection Table Including the Visible Korean Images, Complemented by Free Software of the Same Data International Journal of Morphology
Chung,Beom Sun; Shin,Dong Sun; Brown,Paul; Choi,Jack; Chung,Min Suk.
The objective of this study was to introduce the complementary relationship between virtual dissection table (simply, table) and free software, since authors tried to aid interested people in their studying digital human anatomy. Visible Korean (VK) team had presented the serially sectioned images and outlined images of a male cadaver. Thereafter, Anatomage (San Jose, CA) manufactured the table by making 3-dimensional (3D) volume models from the data. Separately, the VK team reconstructed surface models from the same data and inputted the models in portable document format (PDF) file, which can be opened on the personal computer. The software to browse the sectioned and outlined images was also programmed by VK team. In this report, the table and the VK...
